トランプ大統領は３日夜、米情報機関の内部監察官、マイケル・アトキンソン氏を解任した。アトキンソン氏は、ウクライナへの支援をめぐるトランプ氏の行動についての内部告発を「急を要する」とみなし、議会に通告していた。
トランプ氏は、共和、民主両党の上院情報委員会幹部に宛てた書簡で「監察官として指名した人物には完全な信頼がおけることが不可欠だ」と主張。「この監察官にこれはすでに当てはまらない」と強調した。
トランプ氏によると、解任は30日で発効し、新たな候補者を指名する。就任には上院での承認が必要だ。
アトキンソン氏は、トランプ氏の指名を受け、2018年５月に就任した。2019年８月にトランプ氏をめぐる内部告発を受けた。トランプ氏が権力を乱用し、民主党の有力大統領候補だったジョセフ・バイデン氏を貶めようとウクライナに支援を求めたという告発だった。
