トランプ政権は、中国に対抗するためのアジアの同盟国との新たな同盟構築を進めているが、この問題が、６日に東京で実施されるポンペオ国務長官と日本、インド、オーストラリア各国外相との会合での主要テーマになるとみられている。
今週のポンペオ氏のアジア歴訪は、トランプ大統領が新型コロナウイルスに感染し入院したことから、期間が短縮され、予定されていた韓国とモンゴル訪問は取りやめになった。
しかし、６日の「クアッド（４カ国）」の外相会合の重要性は変わらない。米政権はこのところ、この４カ国を、経済的、軍事的に台頭する中国に対抗する「アジア版ＮＡＴＯ」へと発展させる考えをほのめかしている。
この構想が今週の会合で試される。オーストラリア、インド、日本はそれぞれ、中国の指導者らとの間で問題を抱えており、防衛をめぐる公式な連合についてオープンに話し合う用意はできている。
